There’s the bear who empties the birdfeeder (I learn that birdfeeders are a bad idea in bear country). Beyond that, we have bears who steal candles from our deck. (Maybe they need to light their caves?) But the organic slug bait for my flowerpots? Well, I just hope it doesn’t make the bears sick. By now we have a bear-proof garbage can. But a lot of the vacation cabins don’t. That’s when you wake to overturned garbage cans and trash strewn all about.

When the nearby restaurant has their dumpster tipped over, everyone knows that only a huge bear could do that. Our neighborhood is warned to remain on high alert for bears. Apparently, the bears woke up early from hibernation and food is scarce. This means break-ins are becoming common. Some neighbors claim the bears are becoming a nuisance. They want them removed and relocated, but Chris and I like bears. We hope they’ll get to stay. Even when a bear breaks into our daughter-in-law’s car (she left fast-food remnants inside, with the window open a crack), we still don’t want the bears removed.

One night, our granddaughter leaves one of those colorful oversized lollipops outside, wrapped in waxed paper. The next day we find the smoothed-out wrapper with the lollipop stick laid neatly upon it—almost like a thank-you, from a very neat bear. Not long after that, we’re awakened by a noise on the deck outside our bedroom. We peek out to see a large bear with its nose pressed to the bedroom window, probably looking for another lollipop. We admit that it’s a little unsettling to be separated from a bear by only a pane of glass, but we chuckle and name her Lolly.

One early morning, Chris quietly tells me to come outside. There, we stand motionless in front of our cabin with our dog, Audrey, watching a mama bear and her two adorable cubs less than 50 feet away. Okay, we’re not stupid. We know this is potentially dangerous, but we don’t make a move, and the mama seems okay. We imagine it’s Lolly, here to show us her babies. But when Audrey wags her tail, Lolly sends her cubs up a pair of trees. It’s an incredible scene and, as much as we want to linger, we know it’s time to slip back into the house. But it feels like Lolly simply wanted to show us her babies.
